It’s hard to overstate how much I enjoyed this Godzilla film; it ranks among the very finest in the series. A genuinely compelling narrative involving the human characters is present, and every scene featuring Godzilla delivers. The backdrop of post-World War II Japan significantly enhances the sense of hopelessness felt by the protagonists as they face another devastating attack, this time from a creature that isn’t acting to defend the planet or anything like that. Godzilla comes across as an unstoppable power—whether it's considered natural or scientific—that is indifferent to everything and everyone. The film does have a couple of minor shortcomings: there's one scene that feels overly engineered for emotional effect (the tugboats), and a few instances where characters happen to meet in ways that stretch believability.
