I’ve been watching Godzilla films for as long as I can recall. While most are fun to watch, the 1998 American version is among the worst movies I’ve ever encountered. This one really shouldn't be as impressive as it turns out to be! But it truly is good—really good, and a wonderful way to mark the 70th anniversary of the most famous kaiju around. It absolutely needs to be experienced in theaters. I never imagined a Godzilla movie could have such an emotional impact. The writing and performances are what make it work so well. Kamiki Ryunosuke, Hamabe Minami, Yamada Yuki, Aoki Munetaka, Yoshioka Hidetaka, Ando Sakura, and Sasaki Kuranosuke all did excellent jobs; I’m listing the actors because everyone was great. And I have to give a special mention to the young actress—I don't know her name, but she was fantastic, and I believe she was only three or four years old. Without spoiling anything, the film deals with themes of survivor’s guilt, regret, and finding absolution.
