The story takes place from the final days of World War II through the early postwar period. The nuclear weapons used in the Pacific are what gave Godzilla its abilities, and afterward it heads toward Tokyo, leading to a frantic effort to prevent disaster. A former kamikaze pilot who previously experienced trauma involving Godzilla views this as a chance for retribution. Besides some conversations and character behaviors that might resonate more with Japanese viewers than American ones, the film has everything—romance, drama, grief, an existential crisis, and a brutal, relentless monster. Whether you’re a longtime fan of Godzilla or just someone looking to try out this kind of movie, it's easily one of the strongest films released so far this year.
