The anticipation surrounding this movie was immense right from the beginning! It seemed like this Godzilla installment was promoted for ages before it even came out; every time I went to see a movie, there were short previews playing, and one in particular—the scene with the fisherman catching Godzilla—really stuck with me. It drove home just how huge he is! The film ultimately failed to live up to what fans and critics hoped for, but did all that pre-release buzz and expectation of something truly special hurt its chances?. It certainly didn't help matters, but even setting aside the hype, the movie only occasionally suggests what it could have been. There are a lot of strong elements that seem to get lost in the shuffle, so we’re all too aware of where the film falls short. The way the story builds is really well done; the filmmakers create suspense gradually, like classic monster movies do, keeping you on edge and eager to see the creature through various situations and clever lines. The sound design is fantastic, making it a must-see for anyone who appreciates home theater surround sound, and some of the shots of New York being destroyed are definitely worth seeing. However, then what happens? They seem to discard all that good work by shifting the movie's attention away from Godzilla himself and toward a plot more suited for an animated version. This makes it feel like a cheap imitation of Jurassic Park, which isn’t ideal. Matthew Broderick, Jean Reno, and Hank Azaria all deserved better writing; frankly, we all did! It’s not the terrible movie some people claim it is; it has its good points and bad points, and you could say it's pretty much divided right down the middle. 5/10
