Thandiwe Newton gives a truly noteworthy performance in God's Country, yet the screenplay’s lack of focus and predictable nature ultimately make it difficult to recall. From a technical standpoint, it stands out as one of the festival’s strongest entries; the visuals are stunning, the music is pleasant, and the overall mood is captivating – all the necessary elements for a truly good movie are present. The writer, Julian Higgins, tries to cover numerous themes, but this prevents any real depth or development in any individual area. While the protagonist's reasons are understandable, her subsequent choices seem inconsistent. The racism and sexism she encounters feel authentic, though her responses to them don’t quite measure up. Ultimately, the ending has potential for emotional impact, but because the story unfolds so slowly and without any real surprises, audiences may find themselves too disengaged to be moved by it."
