The movie felt somewhat slow-moving and indistinct for my liking, structured into two sections that depict the journey and establishment of a young Danish priest—a Protestant minister—and photographer in an isolated Icelandic village during the nineteenth century, when Iceland was under Danish rule (from 1376 to 1918) and possessed its own unique languages. The initial section centers on the difficulties of the voyage, including the death of a companion, alongside growing tension between the priest and certain members of their group. The second part explores the priest's integration into the village along with some of the residents, highlighting escalating disagreements and demands as he develops relationships with the daughter of a local farmer and the builder who joined him on the initial leg of his travels. The cinematography is exceptional, showcasing the Icelandic scenery beautifully and to an extent illustrating the contrast between seasons and the gradual erosion of a person’s purpose and identity until they seem to lose their original self. However, beyond that, it didn't convey a particularly powerful theme; instead, it seemed more like a presentation of beauty found within severe landscapes and complex characters rather than delivering an explicit message. Because of this, I would rate it as a 6.5 out of 10.0 / B-.
