The film poses a fundamental question: what does God represent—a logical, ordered presence or an unrestrained power needing control? And how should we interact with this mysterious spiritual concept? These are just some of the unexpected inquiries faced by a young Lutheran minister (Elliott Crosset Hove) who is tasked with establishing a church within a small settlement of Danish immigrants living in late 19th-century Iceland, a place referred to as “the unforgiving island.” Instead of traveling directly to his new assignment, he decides to disembark on the island’s southeastern shore and traverse its varied landscape to reach his destination. This is partly so that he can become acquainted with both the land and its inhabitants, but also because it allows him to pursue his passion for photography as a pioneer in the field. Upon arrival, however, he encounters far more than he anticipated, due to the harshness of the journey and the significant contrasts in language, customs, and a demanding way of life compared to the refined Denmark he left behind. This mix of circumstances challenges his intelligence, tolerance, and especially his faith, as events develop in ways that are both unexpected and potentially unsettling. It’s a transformative experience for which he is ill-equipped and frequently struggles to understand, causing him to reevaluate many of his beliefs and behaviors. The film offers a considered exploration of these themes, showcasing breathtaking visuals, strong acting, and impressive production quality. The rhythm feels surprisingly even, particularly given the movie's length of 2 hours and 23 minutes, although some of the picture’s sequences – as lovely as they are – might have been shortened without harming the overall effect. Writer-director Hlynur Pálmason’s story, rooted in actual events, is likely his finest work so far, but it requires dedication from the viewer to fully grasp and appreciate its beauty and what it conveys about spirituality and its role in human existence.
