A young priest, Fr. Lucas (Elliott Crosset Hove), receives an assignment from his bishop: to travel to a secluded Icelandic settlement and establish a church there. Upon arrival, he’s greeted by "Ragnar" (Ingvar Sigurdsson), who seems less than friendly and is responsible for leading him on the lengthy trek to the village. The journey proves difficult for the priest, pushing him to question his purpose and faith. Harsh weather conditions—the cold, wind, and rain—along with a lack of warmth from those around him, lead him to consider whether he’s truly capable of what he's doing. Exhausted, he falls from his horse, only to wake up at the settlement where "Anna" (Vic Carmen Sonne) is tending to him. He finds himself generally accepted and construction on the church begins, but he struggles to feel comfortable in this new environment, among his parishioners; without developing a growing connection with Anna, he would likely be overwhelmed by despair. The film’s visuals are striking—it's advisable to wear something warm while watching. The landscape is so unwelcoming that it seems barely habitable even for the local ponies, let alone a clergyman accustomed to more comfortable living conditions now reduced to sleeping in a basic tent. The movie was inspired by a photographer’s collection of images, and it may have been his photography that gave him a sense of direction; the man seen at the film's conclusion appears quite different from the one we first see in Denmark. Hove delivers a notably powerful performance, effectively portraying his character’s evolution and drawing viewers into his struggles. I wasn’t keen on, or fully grasped, the final fifteen minutes; the narrative shifts abruptly to something harsh and sorrowful that felt unnecessary and hard to follow. There's a sense of cause and effect, but the reasoning behind it remains unclear—perhaps I overlooked something. Nevertheless, this is definitely worth seeing, and although somewhat lengthy, it does offer moments for reflection.
