It's genuinely pleasing when a movie is set in places familiar from one's own past, and this upbeat musical drama manages to be quite agreeable as well. The story centers on “Eve” (Emily Browning), who spends time in and out of the hospital while remaining committed to her love of music. It seems that fate believes she’s worth a gamble, bringing her together with the introverted musician “James” (Olly Alexander) and fellow singer “Cassie” (Hannah Murray). With contributions from the Glaswegian band “Belle and Sebastian,” along with songs by Stuart Murdoch, we observe these three friends as they attempt to manage their sometimes complicated lives in pursuit of their aspirations. Glasgow has consistently fostered a lively and diverse music scene, and right from the opening scenes at the “Barrowlands” venue, the characters are able to connect with that energetic creative spirit to explore what they can achieve. Each character carries their own burdens, but the film focuses more on showcasing the importance of friendship, some romantic elements, and simply having the self-assurance to believe in yourself and give something a shot. That’s the hurdle for the hesitant “James,” and some of his lines feel remarkably prescient considering he ultimately achieved what he set out to do here. The cast performs their own vocals with enthusiasm, and several songs evoked memories of Kirsty MacColl. Considering it's a low-budget independent film, it makes a surprisingly strong impression. It does move at a leisurely pace, and maybe takes too straightforward an approach to the solutions for mental health challenges, but ultimately it’s a movie that brings a smile to your face and is worth a few hours just to lift your spirits.
