I'm having trouble deciding how I feel about this film. It isn’t terrible, but it also doesn’t stand out as anything exceptional. To begin with: The visuals and character designs are appealing! Like a number of recent Sony Animations films, this one looks really nice visually, and the animation is good once you get accustomed to the somewhat jerky style. This reminds me of "Supa Team 4" or the fight scenes in “Puss in Boots: The Last Wish.” The plot follows a very familiar "underdog" story—complete with all the usual clichés and stereotypes: someone who doesn't fit in because of their background, race, or species wants to master a skill, everyone mocks them, until they prove how amazing they are. It’s a formula used countless times across various sports and crafts. That isn’t necessarily a bad thing. My main issue is with the movie's first half: You know that character—often an angry, unpleasant person—who tells the protagonist they’ll never succeed and doesn’t take them seriously? Like Tigress in Kung Fu Panda or every “rival” in underdog movies? Officially, this role is played by "Jett" in this film. But really, it's almost everyone except the main character's closest friends during the first half. While having one discouraging individual can be a good obstacle to overcome, the fact that so many characters seemed to have the same dismissive personality made me wonder if there would be any genuinely kind people in the movie at all. The film improves considerably as soon as the second half begins—the moment when the protagonist demonstrates their abilities and the characters finally develop some actual personalities. Unfortunately, this happens too late. Instead of dragging out the scenes where everyone doubts him, they should have shortened those and used that extra time to expand on the emotional moments. Because THOSE have potential and reveal more about the characters, but even a significant emotional scene is rushed into a montage, which is disappointing. Additionally, based on the German dub, the movie relies heavily on contemporary slang. To me, this felt awkward, but I recognize that I’m probably not part of the intended audience and am willing to accept it as a feature of current trends. 😅 Oh, also, there are SO many product placements! I'm accustomed to seeing Xperia phones in Sony movies, but wow, there were numerous displays of phones, cars, and clothing—I dislike product placement in films, and here some shots were clearly designed solely to showcase brand logos. So, yeah. The movie is acceptable. It gets much better once the characters start showing personality and having emotional depth. This should have happened earlier and been explored more fully because that’s when the film was at its best. The story incorporates every single trope from underdog movies, using all of the standard character types. If you don't mind that, I would suggest watching it for the appealing visuals. Not necessarily in a fancy movie theater, though. That said: The sheep who runs the diner is a warm, motherly figure; I like her. Modo is messed up in the best possible way. And the aardwolf girl Hannah is the cutest, coolest, most awesome character, and I want to see more of her! ❤️
