Following news from his daughter about his brother’s declining health, “Donal” (Alan Cumming) returns from America, where he once owned a thriving club—until it burned down—to the Scottish family brewery he left behind forty years prior. His daughter, "Amy" (Alexandra Shipp), and granddaughter "Sasha" (Alexandra Wilkie) have kept in touch with "Sandy" (Brian Cox), but for “Donal,” this reunion promises to be deeply unsettling, and upon arriving at their lovely Highland home, he understands that repairing old wounds will be necessary. His return also brings him back into contact with his childhood friend "Jess" (Shirley Henderson), now a skilled blender, with whom he once shared a close bond but who was also left behind years ago. With this scenic yet emotionally charged situation established, the story unfolds in a rather expected manner. While there’s certainly some beautiful cinematography showcasing the unspoiled highlands, the plot itself provides little beyond a standard drama about a troubled family, and it doesn't deliver nearly enough of the clever humor that Scotland is known for. Cumming frequently uses a cigarette as a prop to appear contemplative; Cox hardly appears at all—likely because he was behind the camera. The film seems more interested in portraying an idealized version of twenty-first century Scotland, complete with picturesque landscapes and calm waters against the shore, almost as if it were independent. It needed Gene Kelly to suddenly break into song with "The Heather on the Hill," and honestly, as someone from Scotland, I felt this just wasn't very good.
