It's hard to believe $250 million resulted in something like this—essentially, monkeys gone wild. Ridley Scott’s Gladiator 2 plays out more like a joke than anything else. The actor portraying Pascal's character seems completely superfluous; he’s just there to extend the movie's length without adding anything of substance or significance. Even D.W., who is clearly capable, finds himself stuck with a poorly developed part, delivering awkward lines while the plot falls apart. The storyline concerning Maximus Meridius’ son proves to be insignificant and frustratingly obvious. The "revenge based on family honor" theme becomes apparent so early that you could probably compose the screenplay after watching only the opening scenes. There are no surprises, no layers—just a formulaic imitation of the original film's emotional moments. A salute to Dondus, I suppose.
