It shouldn’t be shocking that it pushes a progressive agenda. What did catch me off guard was the spoiler warnings people are issuing. It makes no sense. Like many sequels and remakes, this feels like a stripped-down version of Gladiator—all the cleverness and enjoyment has been removed. Essentially, it's the same film, just condensed. There are two emperors instead of one. Rome is crumbling, but not due to the usual factors like decadence, lack of critical thought, and overextension of its military – acknowledging those reasons would be considered politically incorrect. Instead, we get a simplistic portrayal where right-wingers are simply evil, alongside fiery (though supposedly nonviolent) demonstrations attributed to an obvious reference to Trump. They might as well have had the villains sporting caps that said "Make Rome Great Again." It’s filled with speeches. And I won't rehash those political monologues—they all follow the same formula. Modern Hollywood’s progressive slant is entirely predictable and can best be described as “The Channel to Loathe.” What’s most disappointing is Denzel’s involvement; I realize he needs projects, but surely he deserves better than this.
