It's not easy to give this film a straightforward rating. On one hand, it delivers exactly what I enjoy—a tough-guy private investigator who doesn't back down and administers his own brand of justice. Yet, it also has moments that feel genuinely absurd, with a script that can be pretty silly and a protagonist who endures an unbelievable amount of punishment before continuing to fight. Ultimately, I did find myself enjoying the movie. The film’s “noir” feeling was appealing, and the main character is undeniably tough and capable of delivering some serious blows. There's plenty of action throughout, and while it can be violent and occasionally goofy, that seems appropriate for the tone, and I suspect it would lose something if those elements were removed. The villains are also memorable. You’ve got your standard thugs who are dealt with quickly, but then there’s the “lollypop girl,” adding a bit of spice to things; a large man who isn't really a villain but a formidable opponent for Malone; and Matchstick, a completely unhinged pyromaniac. He’s genuinely frightening, and I appreciated him as part of the film, even if I wouldn't want to meet him in person. Don’t go into this expecting a well-crafted mystery or even a particularly logical plot. It does have an overarching storyline and some explanation at the finish, but sometimes the characters' actions and how things progress from beginning to end seem rather improvised. Nevertheless, the general weirdness of all the different parts comes together in a way that I liked. The ending was somewhat underwhelming, though. Sometimes you can tell filmmakers intended to make a sequel, but putting “To be continued…” at the end of a movie feels foolish unless they've already secured a deal for it. Fortunately, the main story wraps up satisfactorily; there are just a few of Malone’s personal issues left unresolved by the film’s conclusion.
