This movie was a truly awful experience; I won’t be watching it again and can’t suggest anyone else does either. It’s telling how much faith Disney has in their brand that they even put their name right next to the title like that. The initial concept had potential: a girl who isn't afraid, raised by monster hunters, suddenly needing to confront her fears and hunt those same creatures. That setup seemed promising for hooking viewers, but the clumsy special effects and Disney’s insistence on turning it into a movie about a teen rock band really dragged it down. It was almost strange to realize that this Disney film seemingly lacked sufficient funds to look decent, which just highlighted how a smaller studio was attempting to bring a good idea to life—and I feel sorry that the result fell short. I was taken aback to see Kate McNamara ("ShadowHunters") appear, and her presence only underscored how little she was used. Olivia Holt certainly demonstrated her ability to lead a film, but it’s disappointing that things didn't turn out better overall. The movie simply isn't enjoyable; whenever I thought it might improve, another flawed choice would surface, spoiling whatever I had been appreciating. I’m not sure there are many other movies about teenage monster hunters—typically, they’re trying to escape the monsters.
