Winona Ryder gives a strong performance in this unflinching portrayal of a young woman battling mental health challenges. "Susanna" was taken to the hospital by her concerned parents following what seemed like a suicide attempt. Identified as possibly having a personality disorder, she's admitted to the "Claymoore" facility and treated by "Dr. Wick" (Vanessa Redgrave) and nurse "Valerie" (Whoopi Goldberg). As is typical in these situations, there are many different kinds of people within its walls, and she—and we—meet a variety of individuals, from someone who habitually lies to those struggling with anorexia, antisocial tendencies, and schizophrenia. Some patients are welcoming, while others completely disregard her presence. "Lisa" (Angelina Jolie) is the person she seems to connect with most readily. She’s a manipulative individual whose behavior shifts abruptly between generosity and cruelty, constantly causing problems for the staff. Meanwhile, her new boyfriend, "Tobias" (Jared Leto), attempts to persuade her to rejoin life outside the facility, but she appears to be flourishing in this structured environment, almost dependent on it. Over time, however, she starts to understand that "Lisa" is a damaging influence—a realization underscored by a tragic event that makes things starkly clear. The supporting cast of patients—Clea Duvall, Brittany Murphy and Elizabeth Moss—along with the infrequently appearing Goldberg and Redgrave, all contribute effectively to create an emotionally impactful setting. Jolie stands out, delivering what could be considered a pivotal performance as someone who is hard to like but also evokes a degree of sympathy. The writing is sharp, there are moments of humor, and the film moves along at a good speed; it’s not simple viewing, but it's undeniably powerful.
