Johnny, portrayed by Glenn Ford, is a clever gambler who gets pulled into a complicated situation after being helped out by a mysterious man with a hidden weapon at the Buenos Aires docks. The stranger encourages him to gamble at a casino where Johnny wins a significant amount from the dealer—who turns out to be his benefactor, Mundson, played by George Macready. To avoid trouble, Johnny proposes using his abilities for Mundson’s benefit, and things quickly escalate from there. By the time Mundson decides to take a break, Johnny is essentially in charge of the operation, but he's caught off guard when a new wife arrives and it becomes obvious that she, Gilda (Rita Hayworth), shares a history with him. What follows involves Johnny dealing with a marriage where his wife seems distant, all while police are scrutinizing the illegal gambling and widespread corruption at the casino. As the situation intensifies among the three of them, things become dangerous for someone who has developed respect for his boss and is increasingly suspicious of a woman who’s clearly capable of manipulation. While it appears to be a standard love triangle film noir, the performances are noteworthy—particularly from Macready and Hayworth, along with Steven Geray's wise character, "Uncle Pio," who evoked a sense of a Shakespearean fool. Even Ford, not always known for his range, delivers a thoughtful performance that leads to an ending filled with deception and intrigue. A large writing team can sometimes lead to rambling dialogue, but the direction by Charles Vidor keeps the story moving forward effectively, resulting in a well-crafted thriller with just enough romance to be engaging without overpowering it. Anita Ellis provides the singing, and Hayworth also performs some stylish dance routines, although the lip-syncing isn't entirely convincing.
