It’s good that musicals exist. Adapted from Anita Loos’ play, which itself was based on a novel by Colette, Gigi garnered numerous Academy Awards and has since been the subject of considerable discussion and disapproval. The issue, as many who appreciate musical theater know, is that Alan Jay Lerner and Frederick Loewe essentially reworked their earlier stage success, "My Fair Lady." There's some truth to this; they even incorporated a song from “My Fair Lady,” "Say A Prayer For Me Tonight," into Gigi’s cheerful production. Nevertheless, considered independently, Gigi remains an energetic and gratifying film that continues to endure. The narrative had previously been presented as a French movie directed by Jacqueline Audry in 1950, and then staged on Broadway with Audrey Hepburn a year later. So the story was already quite established. Lerner & Loewe simply applied their "Fair Lady" approach, brought in the skilled Vincente Minnelli to direct, and went outside of the studio system to film on location in Paris. It feels somewhat prolonged at nearly two hours, but it’s still easy to become absorbed in some truly lovely songs and Cecil Beaton's beautiful costumes from the era. The performers are a varied group, occasionally seeming to compete over who can best portray a "French" character, however, the clever dialogue is sharp and witty, and with one of “those” endings, it’s successful and strongly suggested for musical lovers. 7/10
