McKenna Grace delivers a solid performance as the young Mary, who possesses an obvious aptitude for mathematics. Her teacher, Miss Stevenson, portrayed by Jenny Slate, quickly recognizes this talent. Following an incident on the school bus, Mary’s uncle Frank, played by Chris Evans—with whom she resides after her mother's suicide (his sister)—is persuaded to consider a new school with a specific educational focus. Frank believes it’s better for her to grow up among typical children, but some intervention from the dissatisfied head teacher leads him to meet Evelyn, portrayed by Lindsay Duncan. She is Mary’s grandmother and is set on controlling her future so that she can attend this particular school. It becomes apparent that Evelyn isn't inherently unpleasant; she simply has a complicated agenda that gradually reveals itself as the courts must make a difficult ruling. Evans and Grace share a good rapport, and when they are together onscreen, the film effectively shows what works well for them while also highlighting why their way of life is contributing to the conflict surrounding them. I wasn’t particularly fond of how things ended. The relationship between Evans's and Duncan’s characters never felt entirely convincing, but thanks to a one-eyed cat, the final twenty minutes completely disrupt it, leaving us with an unsatisfying resolution that perhaps made more sense in the script itself. Visually, it seemed to undermine the sincerity of the story. Is this ultimately about living through someone else's achievements? Or achieving success regardless of the cost? Nevertheless, it remains a well-made drama featuring moments of engaging dialogue and occasional appearances by Octavia Spencer, offering words of encouragement and guidance to Frank as he struggles. It’s best not to make commitments you aren't certain you can fulfill.
