The film creates an impressive snowy environment and establishes a disturbing feeling, though the narrative itself feels empty. While celebrating New Year’s in the Alberta Rockies, three snowmobile enthusiasts find themselves unexpectedly needing to stay overnight at a mountain hotel that had been closed for five years. “Ghost Keeper” (1981) arrived before other horror movies with similar themes, such as “Curtains,” and particularly “Chill Factor” and “Shadow Lake.” Sadly, it’s the weakest of these films. The initial portion shows some potential, but the latter half simply loses momentum. The director has said that he filmed the movie in sequence, however, financial difficulties arose around halfway through production. Instead of abandoning the project, he disregarded the remaining script and improvised as they went along, hoping to preserve at least a sense of unease connected with the winter setting. He did succeed in this regard, but because the most significant scenes from the original screenplay were intended for the second half, and they could no longer afford to keep the actor playing the ‘ghost,’ the movie fails to live up to its initial promise. Riva Spier, as Jenny, is effective portraying the somewhat introspective main character, while Murray Ord’s role comes across as that of an arrogant person. Sheri McFadden, in the part of Chrissy, adds some energy to the story, but I didn't like her character's carefree nature. The movie has a running time of 1 hour and 23 minutes and was filmed in Lake Louise, Alberta, which is located two hours west of Calgary and 35 miles northwest of Banff. GRADE: C
