There's an unwarranted sense of nostalgia that seems to unfairly influence how audiences view the new female-led “Ghostbusters” reboot. I’m a fan of the original 1984 film too; as a child, I watched it repeatedly on VHS and have probably seen it many times over the years, including special showings in theaters and anniversary events. It feels like this negativity has become something of a badge of honor for people who consider themselves serious movie buffs. All this criticism is really undeserved, especially if you revisit the original film. Yes, it features comedy icons like Bill Murray and Rick Moranis, along with memorable performances from Harold Ramis, Sigourney Weaver, and Dan Aykroyd. It introduced us to characters we still cherish decades later, and made lines such as “tell him about the Twinkie” a permanent part of movie culture. But to those who are being overly critical, I say you’re being very unfair. The film from the 1980s has some slow spots and drags in places; like many movies, our nostalgia can create an idealized view. We tend to only remember the good parts about childhood favorites. If you set aside any preconceived notions, the new “Ghostbusters” respects the original’s legacy, provides a delightful retelling of the classic story, and doesn't disappoint. It is genuinely funny! It really is a good movie! There are a few minor issues along the way (as with most comedies, not every joke lands, and the ghastly remake of Ray Parker Jr.’s “Ghostbusters” by Missy Elliott and Fall Out Boy makes an unwelcome appearance), but overall it’s successful. Initially, seeing women as Ghostbusters might feel strange, but any doubts will quickly disappear (there's a new generation of young girls who will undoubtedly be inspired by these characters). When estranged childhood friends and paranormal enthusiasts Erin (Kristen Wiig) and Abby (Melissa McCarthy) reconnect, their bond is rekindled and they decide to return to chasing ghosts. The intelligent duo is joined by the quirky nuclear engineer Holtzmann (Kate McKinnon) and subway worker Patty (Leslie Jones). When Manhattan experiences a surge of supernatural activity, the friends begin some traditional poltergeist hunting. A significant reason this movie works is because of the comedic talent of these women; their chemistry is apparent and they interact well together, and the positive themes of loyalty and friendship feel authentic. All of the actors are skilled at physical comedy and have excellent timing. The film is very funny, and I laughed throughout (there’s a particularly hilarious sequence at a heavy metal concert that's worth seeing). Also contributing to the entertaining performances is Chris Hemsworth as Kevin, an incredibly dimwitted but handsome man who is hired as the women’s receptionist solely because of his looks. This feminist twist on the classic dumb secretary stereotype is exactly what I was hoping for. In fact, the film doesn’t shy away from addressing critics either: there are several self-aware moments that directly respond to them (my favorite being Holtzmann’s ‘One of the Boys’ t-shirt). It's a celebration of female empowerment! Fans of the original will also appreciate various inside jokes and references, and there’s a long list of fun cameos (which I won’t spoil here: just keep your eyes open and stay through the end credits)! The special effects have been significantly improved as well; these ghosts look real, feel real, and are appropriately scary-yet-funny. When the women first activated their proton packs, I started cheering to myself. “Ghostbusters” is exactly what a summer movie should be. It’s large in scope, full of big laughs, features excellent performances from the cast, has impressive special effects, and it's something the whole family can enjoy. Those who are being negative really need to relax because this is a truly fun film.
