I really wanted to see this movie right away when it came out. It had an all-female cast, Paul Feig directed—he’s from Michigan and even worked in a nod to the state into the film—and there was already plenty of silly stuff circulating online about it. When I sat down to watch, I was really focused on the screen, waiting for something. And then came a fart joke. Then I noticed Kristen Wiig still doesn't seem very engaged when she looks at the camera. But things got better when Charles Dance appeared, with a serious but humorous expression, telling Professor Gilbert that if she’s serious about getting tenure, she needs to get a recommendation from a more impressive university. "More prestigious? Than Princeton?" That’s when I realized how well Wiig could use her deadpan style for comedy. From there on out, I was completely hooked on the story. Katie Dippold co-wrote the film and even has a small role as the real estate agent showing the team the fire station from the 1984 movie that they’re renting. I want to see more of her writing. The dialogue is clever, sharp, and feels genuine. While I enjoyed the original *Ghostbusters* from 1984, it felt like a guys' club—a treehouse where girls weren’t allowed, with “wrong” nailed to the door. It was full of smugness, cheerful male slang, and Venkman using paranormal research to pick up dates. Annie Potts seemed infatuated with Spengler, and Sigourney Weaver appeared in a sheer dress, perched on a ledge waiting for the Gatekeeper. The problematic parts of the 1984 movie are addressed in this one without being disrespectful to women. Gilbert gets to show her interest in the attractive administrative assistant. When you see it, pay attention during the credits; Chris Hemsworth is a very sure actor—he throws himself completely into his role and it’s hilarious. I'm trying to figure out who created the titles and end credits – they are really good work. The poster isn't as great, though. Hemsworth should be positioned behind the four main characters. Honestly. They made some excellent casting choices; Kate McKinnon is wonderful bringing back Harold Ramis’s comedic brilliance. Leslie Jones as Patty is fantastic—she has a lot of memorable lines delivered with style and attitude. There are also well-placed appearances by actors from the 1984 film, including one of the movie's best lines: "safety lights are for dudes." *Ghostbusters* (2016) is a really fun movie, and I plan to watch it again. One visual element that particularly impressed me was the stream coming from the proton packs as they trapped the ghosts—it looked like they were being wrapped, pinned, contained, lassoed. It’s a brilliant comparison for what to do with outdated stereotypes. There's even a lassoing scene while the Ghostbusters are reading online reactions to their first capture. "Ain't no bitches gonna catch no ghosts." Seriously, go see this movie.
