The newest addition to the Ghost Busters series isn’t quite as bad as the 2016 film, but it doesn’t stand out much either. Frozen Empire attempts, unsuccessfully, to recreate the feel of the original 1984 movie. There's a clear attempt to bring back the quirky and silly nature that defined the first one, even bringing in familiar faces to assist. Unfortunately, the clever humor and memorable characters that made the earlier film special are mostly missing. What remains is shallow imitation that isn’t very exciting, with a plot and action that aren't terrible but seem like they're just going through the motions. Regarding the story, I will acknowledge that it’s at least somewhat original and imaginative. However, while this film is easy enough to watch, it’s also quickly forgotten, lacking the blockbuster appeal of the first one from long ago. That being said, and again, fairly speaking, audiences have moved on from Ghostbusters. It feels unsophisticated by today's standards and will never be the kind of success it was in a less complicated era of cinema. I wonder then, why continue trying? Has Hollywood really run out of fresh concepts, to the point where reimagining the past is all it can hope for? Ultimately, this film tries to extract every last bit from an overused and frankly exhausted franchise that’s long since had its moment. It's easy enough to watch, but also easily forgotten.
