Callie Coon’s character finds herself needing to move into her deceased father's run-down house, bringing along her son Trevor Wolfhard and daughter Phoebe Grace. The younger girl then realizes she has an invisible chess opponent and a "ghost trap" within their shaky old home, leading her and her brother, together with their seismologist teacher Paul Rudd, into predictable action. The movie moves slowly at first; it dedicates too much time to establishing the characters, and I started feeling restless before things really picked up. While the final portion does offer some improvement, I would have appreciated a larger role for Rudd’s character and more ghosts to encounter. Visually, it's acceptable, with serviceable effects—though there aren't enough of them. The two child actors perform well together, and the script is reasonably funny, featuring some amusing jokes about scientists.
