During an era defined by big hairstyles and neon colors, a movie emerged that quickly became a significant cultural touchstone. It centered on a group of unconventional paranormal investigators, blending comedy, special effects, and ghosts to become a major success and a lasting part of popular culture. The numerous products released afterward, along with the memorable theme song and tagline, eventually led to a sequel that, while successful in its own right, didn’t quite capture the same impact as the original, effectively putting the “Ghostbusters” film series on hold. Although video games and merchandise kept the franchise alive, the 2016 reimagining with an all-female cast failed to resonate at the box office and once again raised questions about the future of the cinematic franchise. Fortunately, after several postponements due to the Covid-19 pandemic, “Ghostbusters Afterlife” has arrived and proves to be a worthy continuation that honors the original film while paving the way for potential future installments. The story follows Callie (Carrie Coon), a struggling mother, and her children Trevor (Finn Wolfhard) and Phoebe (Mckenna Grace), who are forced to relocate to an old farm in rural Oklahoma after the death of Callie’s estranged father and an eviction notice. A series of unusual earthquakes leads the intelligent and observant Phoebe to suspect something is amiss. With the help of a new friend, Podcast (Logan Kim), and their teacher Mr. Grooberson (Paul Rudd), she begins to uncover her connection to the original Ghostbusters and understands the importance of the equipment left behind by her grandfather on the farm. The situation soon escalates, and despite skepticism from local residents and growing danger, Phoebe, Trevor, and their friends must confront evil forces to save the world. The film takes its time building up to the action, focusing heavily on establishing the characters, their motivations, and their relationships. There are numerous references to the original movie, some subtle and clever, but never feeling forced or unnecessary. Importantly, the film doesn't rely solely on special effects; while the effects are well-done, it’s a story driven by character development, with the new cast working effectively alongside unexpected guest appearances throughout the film. Director Jason Reitman, son of the original film’s director, clearly has a deep understanding and appreciation for the source material. He not only contributed to crafting the story but also skillfully integrates a fresh narrative into the franchise, maintaining continuity with the first film while avoiding a reboot approach. There are two scenes after the credits that viewers should definitely stay for, as they’re entertaining and hint at future adventures. The movie also includes several poignant moments that elicited unexpected emotion from the audience during our press screening, helping to solidify “Ghostbusters Afterlife” not only as a successful addition to the series but also one of the most enjoyable films of the year. 4.5 stars out of 5.
