This movie is a classic—like my review of *Footloose*, just about everybody has seen it, and they all enjoy it. It’s the kind of film that sticks with you from childhood and continues to entertain well into adulthood. I'm going to compare it to the remake now. To begin with, the original *Ghostbusters* takes a serious approach. The humor is presented as if it were part of a drama, which is generally the best way to handle comedy. On the other hand, the remake tries too hard. When comedies force themselves to be funny, they often cease being amusing. Another difference is in how long scenes last. Again, the original’s straightforward approach means that the opening scene from 1984 is brief and genuinely unsettling... ...whereas the remake lingers on introductions of characters who really don't need to be there for the plot. You quickly lose interest. This can also be seen in the humor itself. The introduction of the car in the remake provides a good example. It arrives as a hearse, someone makes a joke about checking to see if there’s a body inside... ...the scene ought to end when they look at the hearse and move on to something else. But the remake stretches it out, which ruins the joke and prevents it from being genuinely funny—it could have been an easy laugh. In contrast, in the original you get jokes like the one involving the Twinkie that ends with "tell him about the Twinkie," and it's humorous because it doesn’t overstay its welcome. The same goes for testing the proton packs; the joke concludes quickly enough to actually be funny. The script and direction are also different. The original *Ghostbusters* adhered closely to the material, ensuring everything was concise, even when lines were improvised—it wasn't allowed to run wild. However, in the remake, the actors seemed to take over, and the improvisation went on for too long, even after some scenes were trimmed. Ultimately, you end up with a tight and fast-paced film that’s funny because it plays it straight...and one that everyone knows and loves as a result of that approach.
