"Ghost Ship," released in 2002 and under the direction of Steve Beck, centers on a group of salvagers who discover an unidentified ship in the Bering Sea. The vessel has been missing for forty years, and they plan to recover it, but their intentions quickly shift as they board the unsettling craft and attempt to guide it into port. The film features a capable cast, with Gabriel Byrne taking the lead. Emily Brown portrays a young girl, while Julianna Margulies is present, though her role feels underdeveloped. Francesca Rettondini also appears; frankly, the smaller-scale "Ghost Voyage" (2008) handles its female characters more effectively. Despite this, the ship sets are impressive and it gives the impression that filming took place aboard an actual boat. Notably, the Antonia Graza from the movie is modeled after the Andrea Doria. Among the film's strengths are: a distinctive musical score incorporating “Not Falling” by Mudvayne; a suitably unsettling ambiance at sea, with one sequence drawing parallels to the well-regarded "Dead Calm" (1989); striking imagery of the large ship dominating the tugboat; and some genuinely suspenseful moments. The opening scene, in particular, stands out as an exceptional horror sequence—it’s truly remarkable. There's also a satisfactory explanation revealed toward the conclusion. If you find yourself enjoying this film, I suggest watching "Ghost Voyage," which was produced for television. “Ghost Ship” had a theatrical release and benefited from a larger budget, but that doesn't necessarily make it superior; it’s simply more refined.
