Johnny Blaze’s possession by Zarathos, a malevolent force, is established as stemming from a constant battle within Johnny himself, who is portrayed as inherently good; any positive actions he took were a result of this internal conflict. Similarly, Dan Ketch, originating from Brooklyn, was possessed by the Spirit of Vengeance, an essentially benevolent being. Despite their struggles for dominance, both the entities and their human hosts developed trust and cooperation. The film attempts to combine these narratives—Blaze, Ketch, and their respective spirits—but fails to do so effectively. This combination eliminates the significant internal conflict and struggle between Johnny Blaze and the evil entity residing within him—a compelling, enjoyable, and intense storyline that is entirely absent from this movie. Dan Ketch’s story, while not as captivating, still offered a worthwhile focus on community, family dynamics, and the personal challenges brought about by his possession; it was also a good and fun narrative, but one that isn't present here. The effort to merge these characters—along with the supporting players—results in the loss of both individual stories. What remains is emptiness, and even extensive CGI cannot compensate for a film lacking substance. There seemed to be no clear purpose or overarching plan. The characters felt underdeveloped as well. It attempted to simultaneously pursue two distinct approaches, ultimately failing to deliver any meaningful narrative. The final product was simply special effects devoid of a story. Choosing one direction—any direction at all, even something entirely new—would have allowed the film to progress with some kind of plot. Sadly, that didn't happen for those involved in its production.
