Ghost Rider falls short of being truly awful like some of Nicolas Cage’s other films, but it also fails to provide a genuinely enjoyable moviegoing experience. It occupies an odd space, somewhere between mildly diverting and immediately disposable. The performances are inconsistent; Eva Mendes doesn't fare well, while Sam Elliott delivers a strong performance, leading to a noticeable disparity in quality among the actors. I do appreciate those moments when Nicolas Cage goes wild transforming into the Rider character. Similarly amusing is his attempt to frighten himself by making silly noises in front of a mirror. The appearance of the poorly-realized fiery skull is also noteworthy (it’s hard to believe the studio signed off on that effect). However, these highlights are infrequent and fleeting; it would probably be better to just view them online.
