I saw Ghost in the Shell in theaters a few days ago, already aware of the controversy surrounding it for the past several months. I generally enjoy science fiction films, and I’ve liked most of Scarlett Johansson's movies over the last eight or nine years, so those were both positives going into this. Regarding the accusations about casting choices, I think people have exaggerated them considerably; it seems like social media users are looking for something to complain about each month. If you're unsure whether to see it because of concerns about a Caucasian actress playing a role that some believe should have gone to an Asian performer, please disregard those worries and watch the film anyway. The character is meant to appear Caucasian, as was the case in the original story, and even the anime’s creator has stated this in interviews. But what about the movie itself? I thought it was good – yes, it was. It wasn't a masterpiece, but it was certainly entertaining. There are people who give it very low scores because they feel the plot deviated too much from the source material; just ignore them and form your own opinion, even if you’re familiar with the anime. In fact, I might have been able to judge it more fairly since I didn't know the original story beforehand, but seeing it made me want to check out those older versions for comparison. The acting is a 7.5 out of 10. Scarlett Johansson does a commendable job, and there’s no question she fits the role of a cyborg struggling with her place in human society. The supporting cast is diverse enough, although some characters don't get much screen time. Visually, it’s a 9/10 – this is where most viewers seem to agree. The movie looks and feels fantastic; the futuristic city resembles a near-future blend of *Blade Runner* and *TRON*. The combination of computer graphics and practical effects works well, effectively illustrating the film's themes about excessive technological augmentation and technology spiraling out of control. The soundtrack is an 8/10. It varies from understated to occasionally loud, and while it didn’t carry the movie, it did enhance it considerably. The story gets a 7/10. Many others would likely rate it lower, perhaps with scores in the 5 or 4 range if they're trying to be objective. Yes, the plot is fairly predictable, and the film’s length of about 100 minutes doesn't help matters. This is probably where most of the negative reactions come from. The filmmakers adapted a story that had more depth and philosophical exploration into a somewhat generic coming-of-age story for cyborgs mixed with an evil corporation doing shady things. The villain also feels very stereotypical and lacks complexity. However, I don’t think a weak antagonist hurts the film too much given its focus on losing or gaining humanity through technology rather than a traditional battle against a bad guy. The writing and dialogue are only a 6/10 – this is the movie's weakest point. More meaningful conversations and interactions between characters could have easily boosted the score by a point or two. The dialogue feels shallow for much of the film, though there are some good exchanges sprinkled throughout that preserve the core theme of human souls existing within machine bodies—though not enough to give *Ghost in the Shell* the depth it should have inherited from its source material. I gave this movie 3.5 out of 5 stars because a 7.5/10 felt like a more accurate reflection of my experience. My advice is to dismiss the criticism about casting, as it’s often overblown. Also, ignore those who give it extremely low scores; they aren't worth listening to. It’s a decent movie with impressive visuals and themes that might stay with you for a day or two after watching. The acting is solid, Scarlett Johansson delivers a good performance, and the soundtrack occasionally hits the right notes. Its shortcomings are its relatively short running time and weak dialogue/writing, which prevent it from being truly exceptional.
