I’ve always been fond of Mel Gibson, and I honestly don't concern myself with his personal issues or controversial statements. I enjoy seeing him act, and this film turned out to be unexpectedly good. It received a proper theatrical release in most territories, but bypassed cinemas altogether in the United States, which struck me as odd. It’s considerably better than much of what currently appears on screens. I have a feeling those who are overly sensitive about political correctness played a role in that decision. I was genuinely surprised by how good this movie was. Gibson seemed well-suited to his character and delivered a solid performance. The prison setting, with its unusual design reminiscent of Alcatraz and Freetown Christiania in Copenhagen, was quite striking. It felt like the kind of environment I wouldn’t have been shocked to see in a Quentin Tarantino film. I also appreciated Gibson's cynical and somewhat ironic narration. The plot itself was acceptable; perhaps not entirely plausible, but adequate for an action movie like this one. Regarding the action sequences, there were some good ones, although the film isn’t overwhelmed by them. They are well-spaced out, and when they begin, they are quite effective. It's true that certain scenes are a bit graphic, though I don't necessarily agree with the R rating. At times, it felt excessive. However, I would prefer an uncut R-rated movie to a PG-13 version filled with unnecessary edits. Of course, there were some absurd moments—like how easily Gibson managed to escape from prison and take a “business trip” to America whenever he pleased, or the idea of performing transplant surgery in such a squalid environment. While Mel may have found that "put it back" line amusing when writing it, I thought it came across as rather silly. Ultimately, this was an enjoyable film. It’s ideal for watching after work when you want to switch off your mind and just relax while viewing something that doesn't require much focus.
