A crime boss’s sudden health crisis sends mobster Chilli Palmer (John Travolta) on an unexpected mission. His new contact, “Bones,” tasks him with collecting gambling debts from Harry (Gene Hackman) in Hollywood. This producer specializes in low-budget horror films that would likely embarrass even Roger Corman, but he's more cunning than he initially appears and quickly attempts to transition Chilli into a film production role. Suddenly, Chilli discovers he already possesses many of the talents needed – persuasion, manipulation, and straightforward pressure – to secure funding for a movie starring Karen (Rene Russo). They enlist established performer Weir (Danny DeVito) as an advisor and try to swindle the stylish drug dealer Catlett (Delroy Lindo) out of $500,000 to cover expenses—someone's expenses, at least. Travolta is in fine form, employing a wry, understated delivery, but it’s Hackman who truly dominates the film. His shrewd and opportunistic character offers an amusing critique of the movie business, from financing to casting to filming. Russo also works well alongside him as the demanding woman with a history with Weir. It seems everyone in this town has dated someone else at some point; the humor does become somewhat repetitive over time, but generally it’s a charming story with a cast that blends effectively to present this lighthearted take on both organized crime and the film industry, based on an Elmore Leonard parody. The film shows its age now, but remains enjoyable viewing.
