The initial encounter between “Chris” (Daniel Kaluuya) and his girlfriend “Rose’s" (Allison Williams) parents as they arrive at their secluded country house is understandably tense. From the beginning, there's something unexpected for the family, but they are polite enough, giving the impression that perhaps the weekend won’t be so awful after all. However, as their time together continues, the young man begins to feel increasingly uncomfortable; he can't quite identify what's bothering him. The arrival of some friends to participate in a family tradition (which Rose seems to have overlooked) only heightens his anxiety. Adding to this unsettling atmosphere is the behavior of her brother “Jeremy” (Caleb Landry Jones), and the almost mechanical actions of the family’s servants – who seem strangely disconnected from reality. Unfortunately, he's right to be concerned, and as his race becomes a more significant factor, it feels like danger might be imminent. Satire can be tricky to execute with subtlety on film, but Jordan Peele uses intelligent writing and an understanding of human behavior to create some memorable character moments. There are some fairly apparent problems lurking beneath the surface, alongside several more subtle ones masked – to differing extents – by superficial politeness. Is it a horror film? I’m not certain about that, at least not in any conventional sense of the genre. It isn't frightening so much as unsettling, and by the time the story reaches its climax, I was starting to feel the message might be pushed too far. The movie does seem to lose momentum after investing so much effort into building up a foundation for something slightly more complex than what’s delivered. Still, Landry Jones is effective as the unpleasant brother, and Betty Gabriel provides a characterization that would have been at home in "The Stepford Wives." Perhaps it will connect more strongly in America, but it remains a powerful exploration of prejudice in its various forms.
