I had some worries about how contemporary Disney would handle “Mickey” when it was released in 2013. However, what resulted is a genuinely enjoyable blend of the initial hand-drawn animation—including Walt’s distinctive voice—and more digitally created sequences, with the cinema screen acting as a bridge between the original black and white film and its Technicolor successor. The narrative itself is quite amusing; Mickey and Minnie find themselves on a wagon train (despite his discomfort with his attire), only to be confronted by the imposing “Peg-Leg Pete.” Following a brief struggle, Mickey unexpectedly appears in the modern era while his sweetheart is held captive by his rival. He’ll need to come up with something fast. Fortunately, he has “Clarabelle,” his dependable cow, assisting him, but will he manage to save her? It's an engaging storytelling approach that juxtaposes different styles, and I was concerned it might feel disjointed, but it doesn’t. The quality of this project is evident not only in the technical execution but also in the underlying idea, and it moves along at a brisk pace.
