Wes Studi’s performance evokes comparisons to Chuck Connors' work from 1962 while portraying the famed Apache leader Geronimo in this deliberately paced biographical film. The story illustrates the disappointments experienced by a man of integrity due to broken pledges and deceit inflicted upon him and his people by an ambitious American government seeking to expand its territory. Jason Patric delivers a noteworthy performance as the officer tasked with guiding Geronimo to a meeting with government officials, including Gene Hackman’s portrayal of “General Crook,” a restrained and thoughtful military figure who understands and feels some compassion for their situation. As they travel together, a connection develops between them, rooted in shared principles of fairness and bravery. This relationship is challenged when Kevin Tighe takes over from "Crook," demonstrating less empathy, and forcing them to confront an uprising. The film boasts impressive visuals and Ry Cooder’s music provides a fitting backdrop; however, Matt Damon's narration, which feels out of place, and the script itself are excessively verbose considering the strength of the characters and imagery. It avoids providing a genuine examination of the injustices committed in the name of advancement, ultimately becoming an extended and somewhat underwhelming experience that fails to live up to its potential.
