I recently experienced a lovely wedding ceremony for my younger sister, marking an important new phase in her life. Following that positive event, I found myself watching something truly regrettable, and it’s hard to deny that it represents a remarkably understated instance of me undermining my own contentment. It seems I have a persistent difficulty accepting happiness. Geostorm features Gerard Butler as a scientist who is difficult to accept as credible. He has the appearance of someone who plays drums in bands occasionally while also working part time and living with his girlfriend. The storyline is ridiculous, even when considering it’s science fiction. The visual effects are substandard; structures collapse without damage, resembling oversized blocks, everything that's hot bursts apart, and storm surges bounce off buildings before moving through the streets. Even if you could anticipate what would happen next well in advance of the movie reaching its conclusion, the narrative itself wouldn’t be worthwhile. Any attempts at portraying genuine human connection feel tacked on: a father makes a pledge to his daughter and must save the world while fulfilling it, a brother with questionable morals makes difficult decisions to regain his family's trust, and so forth. In essence, this film is like The Wandering Earth, but even less enjoyable.
