It’s remarkable how soon after Kazan began making movies—and following the conclusion of World War II—this film appeared, achieving what was then his greatest box-office success, even if other films like *A Tree Grows In Brooklyn* and *Boomerang* would also be recognized with Oscar nominations. It's a strange thing that not long after a major war had been fought, largely against racism and the persecution of Jews abroad, Gregory Peck’s character, Schuyler Green, while working secretly to satisfy his new boss in New York City, finds widespread prejudice shockingly near where he lives. I really appreciate John Garfield’s performance—relatively late in his brief career—as Dave Goldman; he deserved an Academy Award nomination too. The film did very well at the Oscars, winning three awards out of eight nominations (for Best Director, Picture and Supporting Actress, played by Celeste Holm), and its conclusion—highlighting that it's possible to forgive and accept others (when Green returns home and forgives his wife)—is significant, even if he made a mistake in who he chose.
