This film feels very much like those classic "Ealing Comedies," presenting an uncomplicated and enjoyable narrative centered around two men—Alan (played by John Gregson) and Ambrose (Kenneth More)—who make a wager of £100 (in 1953) to see whose vintage car can complete the roughly fifty-mile drive from London to Brighton fastest. They bring their hesitant partners, Wendy (Dinah Sheridan) and Rosalind (Kay Kendall), along for the ride, leading to a string of amusing incidents that challenge their bond, test the officers’ tolerance, and expose the limits of their mechanical skills. The visuals are vibrant, and the cars seem nearly as unpredictable as the drivers become as they compete with each other. For me, Kay Kendall stands out—being forced to push a car from a large puddle certainly wasn't part of her agreement; and the final scene is quite literally a dead heat. There’s a good amount of gentle humor throughout, complemented by a cheerful musical score composed by Larry Adler that suits their automotive adventures perfectly. It's simply an entertaining time.
