I’ve never subscribed to the idea that certain movies are only for specific audiences—chick flicks are enjoyable for everyone, action films aren't exclusively for men, and magical stories don't belong solely to children. I enjoy them all, or at least I readily admit that I do. While they weren’t a big part of my childhood, I have seen quite a few Disney Channel Original Movies over the years, and most of them I’ve liked. This film came out about five years ago; I was aware of it then, but only recently did I watch it, and it surprised me. I went in expecting another story centered on stereotypical mean girls, and that's where my assumption was incorrect. The beginning certainly suggested that, but everything shifted around the start of the second half. That’s what made this film stand out. Even with some predictable moments, I still found it quite enjoyable. The way the characters developed felt very clever; you might dislike them initially, then gradually find yourself sympathizing with them. It's a TV movie, but doesn't feel like one. The story had the same quality as a theatrical release. If they’d taken that chance, I think it would have paid off. It seems like a misstep on the production company’s part, but ultimately the final product exceeded what was expected. The actors were well-chosen; all of them were new to me, with the exception of Sasha Pieterse. It's typical for fans to hope for a sequel whenever a film is considered good or successful, and I had that thought too. However, it appears they aren’t interested in making one, which was pretty much confirmed at the very end. Even if they were to change their minds, it wouldn’t be as good as this original. The main story wrapped up completely here. It's similar to 'Taken', a powerful film that isn't really suited for sequels. It’s a somewhat frivolous concept, but it's a genuinely nice movie. I definitely recommend it. _8/10_
