The film presents a vision of the future where liberal eugenics is commonplace, leading to distinctions between "valids" – those genetically engineered – and "in-valids," who are conceived naturally and thus more prone to genetic issues. The story follows Vincent (Ethan Hawke), an in-valid who takes on the identity of a disabled valid (Jude Law) so he can achieve his ambition of traveling into space. Uma Thurman and Gore Vidal also appear in the cast. "Gattaca" (1997) is described as a “tech noir” science-fiction drama, blending futuristic elements with the aesthetic of 40s/50s film noir. The visual style isn't limited to clothing and hats; the cars resemble classic coupes from the 50s and 60s, though they make an electric whirring sound. It shares similarities with “Dark City” (1998), but possesses a more serious tone. If you were to picture "Dick Tracy" (1990) recast as a subdued, futuristic science-fiction story, that would offer a reasonable approximation of the film's atmosphere. Despite generally positive reviews from critics, the movie underperformed at the box office. An appreciation for eugenics and related concepts seems necessary to fully engage with it; otherwise, it comes across as merely adequate. Personally, I find “Dark City” more appealing when seeking out a film of this type. The runtime is 1 hour, 46 minutes, and filming locations included Marin County Civic Center in San Rafael, Otis College of Art and Design, the CLA Building at California State Polytechnic University, Pomona, the Sepulveda Dam spillway, an exterior shot outside The Forum in Inglewood, and the Kramer Junction Solar Electric Generating Station.
