I recognized from the very beginning that he posed a threat to her. Gaslight was directed by George Cukor, adapted for the screen from Patrick Hamilton’s play by John Van Druten, Walter Reisch and John L. Balderston. The film features Ingrid Bergman, Charles Boyer, Joseph Cotton, May Whitty, Barbara Everest and Angela Lansbury. Bronislaw Kaper composed the music, and Joseph Ruttenberg was in charge of cinematography. Some time after her aunt’s death in their London home, Paula Alquist Anton (Bergman) moves back there with her new husband, Gregory Anton (Boyer). However, what initially seems like a perfect marriage begins to fall apart as Paula appears to be losing touch with reality… It's important to consider just how significant Gaslight was when it first came out. It’s become an inspiration for many films that have followed over the years. The psychological thriller—particularly one involving a spouse being tormented by their partner—has been explored extensively and will continue to be, and even terms like "Gaslighted" or "Gaslighting" originated from this film. So, if it seems dated or old-fashioned, its impact remains substantial. Regardless, it’s still an excellent atmospheric thriller set against a beautiful backdrop of Victorian London: fogs, cobbled streets, gas lights, and eerie shadows. The movie is divided into two parts; the first part shows a whirlwind romance leading to marriage, then the move to their marital home where supporting characters are introduced—a nosy neighbor (Whitty), a housekeeper (Everest), and a young housemaid (Lansbury in her debut). Subtle psychological manipulations unfold, though we never actually witness the deceptive schemes being carried out. Then, in the second half, things really escalate; Gregory Anton’s calculated actions begin to unsettle us. We see Paula unraveling, her mind fractured, so vulnerable and confused that it would take a cold heart not to feel deeply affected. It's here where Bergman shines, earning her first of three Best Actress Oscar wins, without resorting to over-the-top acting. Boyer is also outstanding; under Cukor’s direction, he portrays Gregory as a charming villain, offering only subtle hints about his deceitful and wicked intentions. Cotton doesn’t attempt a British accent, which works well since he performs admirably as Brian Cameron, the man who starts to understand what's really happening in the Anton home. Brian serves as our hero, giving us someone to root for as the film heads toward its revelations. With Ruttenberg (Oscar Nominee) using noirish contrasts throughout the film, and Kaper’s music subtly enhancing the mood, Gaslight achieves high marks across all technical aspects. Overall it's a truly great movie, and one that’s worth revisiting if you tire of more modern, polished genre films. 9/10
