It’s my feeling that this film is often dismissed because of the more famous 1944 adaptation, but I believe it holds up just as well. The story follows a newly married couple who relocate to a Victorian Square, and shortly after, “Bella” (Diana Wynyard) begins exhibiting strange behavior – she becomes forgetful, misplaces objects, and seems increasingly detached from reality. Her husband, "Paul" (Anton Walbrook), initially understanding, eventually grows frustrated with her, and when she claims to hear footsteps and see gas lamps flickering, he suggests she be committed. However, the situation isn't quite as straightforward as it appears; are Bella’s experiences genuine, or is something else at play? The unexpected appearance of "Rough" (Frank Pettingell) prompts everyone to re-evaluate their assumptions, as he uncovers evidence suggesting Paul may have a dark secret in his past. Thorold Dickinson maintains a good sense of rhythm with this faithful adaptation of Patrick Hamilton's play; the acting—particularly Walbrook’s unsettling portrayal—is strong and believable, and Richard Addinsell composed a score that complements the mounting suspense as the mystery moves toward its resolution.
