It’s hard to imagine something like this being produced now. The Republicans aren’t portrayed as complete fools—not simple-minded, monstrous beings from another planet—so it wouldn’t be considered acceptable these days; people would likely find it offensive. It's just not permissible to make generalizations like that. While Palin proved to be an error in judgment, the film places all responsibility on her shoulders. But was that truly the whole story? Considering we had just endured eight years of the Bush presidency, a Democratic victory seemed inevitable regardless of who secured the nomination. Whether it was Obama or Hillary Clinton—or even someone else entirely—the Democrats would have prevailed. The political climate at the time was so saturated with dissatisfaction regarding eight years under W that the Democratic National Committee could have nominated someone who committed an unthinkable act on television, and they still would have defeated McCain. McCain’s downfall wasn't Palin; it stemmed from his association with Bush, being part of the same party as him, while Americans were desperately seeking a different direction after those years. Therefore, the film unfairly attributes blame to Palin... though she undeniably was an error in judgment. She simply wasn't prepared for such a high-profile role and represented a flawed selection. Despite that, it does present a reasonable explanation of why she was unsuitable. The acting is good, the direction is solid, and it offers a fair portrayal of her shortcomings. Ultimately, Bush ensured that Obama was unbeatable. As far as political films go, this one is balanced and skillfully made—even with its misplaced focus on blame.
