This film represents a significant undertaking. It’s hard to overstate how rare science-fiction films are within Turkish cinema, and considering the production cost—approximately 4 million USD, which is substantial by Turkish standards—it's remarkable. To put that in perspective, George Lucas spent 125 million USD on Star Wars Episode III, so this film achieves a great deal given its resources. The narrative isn’t groundbreaking, but that wasn’t really the expectation. Cem Yilmaz successfully brought his idea of “Turks in space” to life. His attention to detail is fairly standard. To fully appreciate the movie's humor, it helps to be familiar with Turkish slang—something Cem Yilmaz uses expertly—and also to have some knowledge of American science-fiction films like Star Wars, The Matrix, or Star Trek. It’s really when you combine those two things that the film becomes genuinely funny. G.O.R.A is quite different from what audiences in Turkey are used to, which I suspect explains why some people didn't connect with it. I see this as marking a new phase for special effects in Turkish films. Ultimately, it’s a well-made space movie produced in Turkey.
