It’s hard to imagine many American soldiers stationed in Germany following World War II appearing as polished as “Tulsa” (Elvis Presley) and his men when they place a wager that "Dynamite" (Edson Stroll) won't be able to win over the attention of "Lili" (Juliet Prowse), a local dancer known for turning down soldiers’ romantic overtures. The prize, if they succeed, would provide enough money for “Tulsa” to return home and start his own nightclub. However, just five minutes into the bet, his friend is transferred to Alaska, leaving him to complete the challenge on his own. Initially, she shows no interest whatsoever; however, things proceed along a very familiar path. Those who appreciate Elvis’s work will likely find this film appealing due to its carefully planned choreography, lighting, and staging, even though Presley doesn't seem comfortable or authentic throughout, nor does he perform his own vocals. The "Jordanaires" also participate, but the performances of songs like Carl Perkins's classic "Blue Suede Shoes," along with "Wooden Heart" and "Pocketful of Rainbows," feel disjointed and inserted into a flimsy plot that, to be fair to Prowse, provides one brief showcase of her dancing abilities. This portrays a very clean-cut version of “The King,” feeling like something manufactured by a marketing team determined to avoid any risk. It’s not particularly good, regardless of who you ask.
