David Mackenzie's FUZE appeared on HBO recently, and it’s an inventive heist movie featuring strong performances from Aaron Taylor-Johnson as Major Will Trantor, Theo James as Giorgio Korales, Sam Worthington as "X," and Gugu Mbatha-Raw as Chief Superintendent Zuzana Greenfield. The screenplay by Ben Hopkins shares a similar approach to Mackenzie's earlier film, HELL OR HIGH WATER; it gradually increases the suspense throughout this London-based bank robbery story. During construction in central London, an old bomb from World War II is unearthed, prompting bomb disposal specialists to begin the painstaking process of disarming and removing it. The usual safety measures require clearing everyone within a radius of approximately 800 yards. Working alongside the London Metropolitan Police Service, they start the difficult job of going house to house, moving business owners and residents to a secure location. Predictably, a nearby bank and its staff are also included in this evacuation – you can probably guess what happens next. As Worthington and James, along with their team, begin their robbery inside the now-vacated apartments, things aren’t quite straightforward. Mbatha-Raw becomes increasingly doubtful, leading to several unexpected developments and an unusual but ultimately satisfying ending. Taylor-Johnson, James, Worthington, and Mbatha-Raw give compelling performances in this entertaining heist thriller that introduces a fresh perspective into a genre that feels like it’s already explored every possible way to commit bank robbery. Sometimes, all you need is a half-ton World War II bomb to shake things up.
