The action sequences in 'Fury' are genuinely impressive; the special effects stand out, and the sound design is excellent. It’s a film with considerable gore, featuring numerous explosions and graphic depictions of injuries. It seemed clear that the filmmakers were attempting to emulate 'Saving Private Ryan,' borrowing elements from its character development and striving for comparable emotional resonance. What wasn't apparent was that 'Saving Private Ryan' itself drew inspiration from earlier war films, honoring them while presenting powerful and affecting battle sequences. ‘Fury’ failed to achieve this. Much of the dialogue felt awkward and unbelievable, and a romantic subplot awkwardly inserted into the narrative didn’t land well. The characters were simplistic, feeling like familiar archetypes. Ultimately, the movie resembled ‘Tropic Thunder’ more than 'Saving Private Ryan'. The film's absence of expansive views of the settings and combat diminished its sense of scale and beauty compared to other war movies. Despite these shortcomings, the action was skillfully executed and consistently engaging, showcasing strong direction. ★★★½
