A continuation of "Funny Girl" arriving seven years later felt almost inevitable, yet ultimately proved to be an unnecessary disappointment. The story revisits Fanny Brice's life after her initial success, focusing on her connection with minor writer Billy Rose, who contributed some of her popular songs and became her husband. While Streisand delivers a respectable performance, the screenplay doesn’t measure up to the original; what was once charmingly innocent humor now feels forced, crude, and simply not funny. The musical numbers, including "More Than You Know" performed by Streisand and "Me and My Shadow" featuring Al Jolson, show Rose possessed some talent for songwriting – Yip Harburg also contributed to the first song – but there’s a lack of genuinely memorable material from him. It seems Kander and Ebb, who were Oscar nominated, carried much of the musical weight here. The film spends too long exploring their troubled relationship, and by the midpoint, Caan's initial spark had become bogged down in sentimentality. Omar Sharif adds a touch of class to the proceedings, and Roddy McDowall does his best to inject some energy, though he’s not exactly known for versatility; ultimately, it feels like a collection of songs with performances that seem awkwardly inserted. It is certainly polished – the visuals and sound are excellent – but it's essentially empty, like an elaborate confection with nothing substantial inside.
