Barbra Streisand delivers a truly remarkable performance portraying the formative years of Vaudeville performer and actress Fanny Brice. The story follows her journey from modest origins, with support from her friend Eddie Ryan (Lee Allen), as she gains the notice of Florenz Ziegfeld (Walter Pidgeon) and ascends to legendary status. Streisand’s portrayal feels genuine—her character's background as a Jewish woman, her appearance that doesn't fit conventional beauty standards, and her spirited personality are all portrayed with charm while she develops feelings for Omar Sharif, who is also very good as her charming suitor Nicky Arsntein. Their complicated romance, enhanced by sharp conversations and an impressive selection of songs from Jule Styne and Bob Merrill, James Hanley, and Grant Clarke, makes this a genuinely enjoyable cinematic experience. Songs like "Second Hand Rose," "People," and “Don’t Rain on My Parade” have become beloved classics frequently performed by prominent singers. The film also features several memorable supporting characters—particularly in the initial scenes—which contribute to making William Wyler's classy production well worth seeing. It should be noted that there are many dramatic liberties taken; this isn't a factual account, but rather an entertaining two and a half hours.
