Following World War 2, Disney struggled to regain its footing after the war’s impact on studio operations. During that time, they created what were known as "Package Features," collections of several stories instead of single films like "Snow White," "Pinocchio," and "Fantasia" had been before the conflict. This particular film, “Fun And Fancy Free,” combines two story ideas that were already in progress when the U.S. entered the war in December 1941: "Mickey & the Beanstalk"—which is shown on the cover—and "Bongo," a bear who performs in a circus. These segments weren't complete enough to stand alone, so they were joined with appearances by Edgar Bergman and his act to provide additional content and extend the running time. I have this film along with others from the series on DVD for my children and grandchildren, but it’s not among Disney’s strongest releases. Some of the video and DVD versions include bonus material that does add value to the "Package Feature." Other examples of these “Package Features” are "Melody Time," "Make Mine Music," "Three Caballeros," and "The Adventures of Ichabod & Mr. Toad.” They were all made in the late 1940s, and while they feel somewhat assembled, they’re still enjoyable for kids.
